How to prepare for an in-home/studio Newborn photography session

By Jess Backway – Newborn Photographer, Bendigo

Bringing your baby in for their first professional photos is such a special milestone. Whether you’ve done this before or you’re a brand new parent running on caffeine and cuddles , i’ve got you. Here’s a simple, stress-free guide to help you prep your baby (and yourself!) for a beautiful newborn session.

1. Keep Baby Awake Before the Shoot
A bit of playtime or a warm bath before your session can help baby be nice and sleepy once we start. This isn’t always possible, especially with newborn wake times can be pretty unpredictable and that’s totally okay, but it can make a big difference.

2. Feed Baby Just Before the Session
A full tummy helps your baby settle and sleep. Try to feed them just before you arrive or when you get here. I always allow plenty of time for feeding and cuddles, we go at baby’s pace.

3. Keep Baby Upright After Feeding

Holding your baby upright for 10–15 minutes after a feed can help release any gas and make them more comfortable ,which often means a sleepier, more relaxed baby. Plus this forces mum to sit, slow down and relax (which is exactly how I want to find you!)

4. Dress Baby in a onesie/zippy
Babies generally don’t love being undressed, so keep it easy and fuss-free. A soft, loose-fitting onesie (nothing over the head) is perfect. We’ll layer them in wraps or blankets as needed (even in the car) - warmth is key.

5. Don’t Overdress Baby

Babies can overheat quickly, especially in a warm studio or home setup. Instead of bundling them up, dress them lightly and layer with wraps once we start shooting.

6. What to Bring

Nappies & wipes, Dummy (if baby uses one), A favourite wrap or heirloom blanket, extra milk/bottles (if bottle feeding) , any props or special items you’d like included

7. Studio Etiquette (if you’re coming to me)

Please keep food to dry snacks only during the session to help protect the space and keep the session calm. Siblings are absolutely welcome — I just ask that any food is non-messy and water only for drinks.

8. Preparing Your Home (for in-home sessions)

If we’re shooting at your place, warm the room slightly beforehand ,babies love a cozy space. Please try to tidy the room we’ll be using (usually your bedroom or lounge). Make the bed, clear bedside tables, and move clutter or kids’ toys away from the windows — natural light is our best friend! If you’re not sure how to set up the space, we can always do a quick FaceTime beforehand and I’ll help guide you. Super simple.

9. Relax, you’ve got this (and I’ve Got You)

Newborn sessions are slow, calm, and baby-led. It’s totally normal if baby cries, needs extra cuddles, or feeds multiple times. There’s no pressure or rush, this is about capturing your little one in a relaxed, gentle way.
