Maternity & Newborn Photos: What to Wear & How to Feel Confident

Hi there!

So, you’ve booked your maternity or newborn photography session in, yay!
Now comes the question so many of my clients ask:

“What should I wear?”

I promise it doesn’t have to be stressful. The goal is to feel comfortable, confident, and true to yourself. Here are my favourite tips for wardrobe choices that look great

For Maternity Photos

Flowy dresses are magic – soft fabrics that move with the breeze add romance and movement.

Neutral, earthy tones – creams, beiges, muted greens, or dusty pinks look dreamy in Bendigo’s natural light.

Textures over patterns – lace, knits, or linen look gorgeous on camera, while big logos or busy prints can distract.

Layers for comfort (and movement)– a cardigan or shawl not only keeps you cosy at a sunset shoot but also adds dimension to your look.

Basics - You don’t have to wear a big flow dress or colour you’ve never worn before. A bralette, oversized shirt and jeans is a timeless casual look you can’t go wrong with

Be yourself - If you have a fave vintage sweater or dad just can’t let go of then even better! Nothing is more special than looking back on images that are uniquely-you!

For Newborn Sessions

Keep it soft & simple – cotton, muslin, or knits in soft neutral colours work beautifully.

Avoid stiff outfits – comfort is everything, for both you and your baby.

Parents & siblings wanting to match - stick to a gentle colour palette that works together. You don’t need to be “matchy,” but aim for colours that blend softly.

Barefoot at home – nothing looks more natural in newborn photos than being barefoot in your own space.

Confidence is Everything

Remember: your photos aren’t about looking perfect, they’re about feeling you - you don’t need a stylist or a brand-new wardrobe. Choose pieces you feel yourself in. I’ll guide you with posing and light so that you can relax and enjoy the moment.

Local Bendigo Session Tips

Since many sessions happen outdoors and we are in Bendigo—whether it’s Lake Weeroona, a quiet bushland track, or the streets at sunset, consider practical things too: comfy shoes for walking, water on hot days, and a wrap for chilly evenings.

The beauty of Bendigo is that our landscapes are so versatile—fields, lakes, bush, and heritage streets all give a unique backdrop. What you wear should feel at home in those settings.

When you look back at these photos, you won’t be thinking about whether your outfit was “perfect” you’ll be remembering the feeling of your bump, your newborn’s tiny fingers, and the love you shared in those early days.

If you’re a mum in Bendigo or the surrounding areas and ready to create something timeless, I’d love to help. Reach out and let’s plan your session together.
